Joe Mansfield’s ‘Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession’ coffee table book is a tasteful little affair that once perused will give you ultimate drum machine jealousy. I wish I hadn’t bought the damn thing as now I spend all my time scouring ebay for rhythm boxes and primitive drum machines.
One such machine I’ve got my beady eye on is the Drumulator, E-mu’s stab at besting Akai’s MPC range but with a budget price tag. I’m a big fan of the design, the working interface and of course, the righteously rocking 12 bit samples that will no doubt be recognizable. This little 7” acts as a companion piece to the book and showcases the Drumulators beat strength. The A-side is an old school black rocker ft. 7L & Esoteric rhymes. Flip it and there’s an instrumental break break that brings to mind the industrial tinged beats of The Disposable Heroes of Hyphoprisy.
If you like 80’s drum machine beats then this is worth a look. Hopefully Mansfield will dig out a few more machines and hit us with a second volume soon.
