- The New Standard by Jamie Saft, Steve Swallow, Bobby Previte

With its austere black and grey sleeve and a label name like "Rare Noise" I thought this was going to be some sort of free jazz/noise reissue but aside from the fact it's a jazz record I was in fact doubly wrong. This is a new record, featuring pianist pianist Jamie Saft alongside the rhythm section of Bobby Previte and Steve Swallow, who bust out ten freewheeling but economical pieces over the course of these two LPs.
While drummer and bassist both fill their roles admirably, it's Saft who hogs the spotlight on 'The New Standard', with a lively style that mixes cool lounge jazz affectations with an anarchic, free-expressive spirit that sees him spin off on spiralling deviations and cheeky blue-note chord progressions. This adherence to classic jazz forms makes the more rebellious moments stick out all the more, making for a classy but ultimately fun and sometimes even amusing collection. For an extra touch of class it's all been recorded onto 1/2" tape through a Neve console and given a fully analogue vinyl master. Very cool.
