Martha are surely Pity Me's most potent pop-punk band who through a lot of touring have built themselves a rather large and rabid fanbase. Courting Strong was their debut album and comes across as if Weezer were a bunch of excitable northern vegans who liked nothing better than to write energetic tunes about love gone askew and their dislike for right-leaning politics.

Bit of lively and highly melodic indie pop here from Martha, a band not a person. It's on FortunaPOP! and it's produced by Hookworms wunderkind MJ so my expectations are high. It's fast-paced and has a chunky late '90s power pop sound to the guitars. The songs are all quite wordy with boldly delivered boy/girl vocals delivered in a thick north eastern accent.   It's reminding me quite a lot of the first Arctic Monkeys album in places but mixed with a buzzy, jangly kind of C86 gallop with a Johnny Foreigner-ish naive urgency. They remind me of that certain brand of pop-punk-inflected indie rock from the '90s that was made by bands with one-word names like Gravel and Midget and Gel. I'm slightly underwhelmed, whelmed at best, stuff this tuneful and vocal-heavy and earnest can irritate me a little. I can't deny it's punchy and tuneful stuff and closer 'So Sad (So Sad)' has a cool Weezer-inspired ending that was worth saving for the grand finale, but I'm struggling to connect with this record.   Am I just getting too old for this kind of thing? The kids will love it. If you're a kid and you love it, don't listen to me, I'm just a grumpy old fart.
