- Pacific Bridge by Richard Crandell & Masumi Timson

This is beautiful. It's a collaboration between Richard Crandell and Masumi Timson in which Crandell plays the mbira, a traditional African instrument, and Timson plays the koto, a Japanese creation. The former is a hand-held kind of thumb piano which makes a chiming sound almost like a dulcimer crossed with a steel drum, while the Koto is a larger kind of tabletop harp with a nice twangy physicality to it.
There are 11 pieces on here which vary from mystical and meditative prettiness to quite frantically thrashed koto sections and mysteriously flowing improvisations. 'Japanese Lullaby' is particularly beautiful, the mbira tinkling sparsely like raindrops on a pond while the koto weaves a graceful bendy melody. This whole collection is utterly lovely, though. I'm struggling to find things to compare it to without highlighting my naivete because I've not really listened to either of these instruments a great deal before, but the sounds collected here are absolutely bewitching.
