7/10 Staff review, 02 July 2014

Here's a debut album from Californian producer Steve Nalepa, British producer Adam Freeland and Australian producer RY X, who collectively call themselves The Acid. Despite the seeming abundance of producers among their line-up, 'Liminal' is a crisp and concise brew, fusing minimal synthpop and techno, with falsetto vocals from RY X that soar pensively over a subtle backdrop of skeletal beats and understated synths.   It's a pleasing combination, with a The xx-esque sense of economy in the writing and arrangements, simple melodies and weary emotions, but approached from a more dance-oriented direction with some cleverly kinetic grooves hanging airily over the strangely intoxicating slow-burn melodies in a way that's somewhat reminiscent of Active Child or How To Dress Well mixed with James Blake at his most restrained. It's not bad at all, although I'm finding the techno elements often leave the songs feeling strangely cold and emotionally impenetrable.   Interesting minimal techno/synthpop with unsettling and creepy undertones.
