7/10 Mike Staff review, 02 May 2014

Before I pack up my review wagon for the week there's just time for a quick voyage into the deep space power electronics of Ivy Barkakati on this startling new tape for Hospital Recordings. This is all mangled synth noise and lots of short chopped up repeato noises. The opening track sounds kind of like a helicopter blade stabbing away with all kinds of weird phasing going on and some awkward farting drones that intermittently fill out the background. The piece which follows it has lots of broken-sounding flickers and flutters high in the mix while a piano tinkles away in another room and some hushed laser gun noises chatter away amongst themselves.

The second side introduces more melodic elements than the first, but the bleak malfunctioning-spaceship vibes are still strong. It's more spacious too, with less of the fast-blasting repeato loops and more woozy modular jamming, cosmic arpeggios and evil infected-computer drones. It's a pretty awkward listen in places but lots of interesting sounds going on if you're into dark lo-fi futuristic synth experiments.
