7/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 09 May 2014
Four remixes of classic Laraaji compositions by four big playas in the realm of contemporary ambient and experimental music; Bee Mask, Ela Orleans, Sun Araw and Motion Sickness Of Time Travel. This 12” acts as an introduction to the All Saints/Warp compilation that accompanies classic ambient tracks from the All Saints back catalog with reworkings by the best in the field today. You know Laraaji right? I don’t have to explain that bit to you...I hope.
The Bee Mask mix of “Cave” is a bizarre multi-textured cut-up that’s not doing much for me, but then Ela Orleans “Kalimba” mix is wild, mixing the ambient with the anxious to create an (initially) tranquil mix that gets more intense and noise driven as it progresses.
Touring companion Sun Araw’s mix is ultimately the most tasteful and true to Laraaji’s New Age spirit whilst still maintaining and successfully combining them with the hallmarks and Arawisms of the Stallone’s sound. It’s actually quite concise and groovy for a dubber.
Last but not least is Motion Sickness Of Time Travel’s mix of the excellent “Space” which to be honest is just too beat heavy to compliment the original elements of the composition. Saying that it’s still a thoroughly enjoyable piece.
