7/10 Clinton Staff review, 15 May 2014
Everyone has a middle name these days. Here is another one - a Canada resident who is described by the New Musical Express as “Elliott Smith (nope) hopped up on Arthur Russell's happy pills (can’t hear it).” I do see what they are getting at however, its lovely lazy lo-fi pop with nods to Easy Listening and 60’s soundtrack stuff. Its odd. He flutters, he flitters, he doesn’t chuck this stuff in your face, its all done in a rather insouciant manner using broken drum machines and creaking keyboard, on top his sings in a rather small voice. It is, however, quite enjoyable in its own sweet way.
Opener ‘Naturally’ is played as if he’s got one hand tied behind his back but there is a charm to it and the melody wanders around nicely. As a starting point think of a lazy, laid back Metronomy without the stellar songwriting and lyrical dexterity. ‘Heartless’ certainly has enough 80’s references sounding like a much photocopied, yellowing specimen of the era. It won’t knock your socks off but its a pleasant ride.
