Here's a strange and ambitious album of futuristic prog rock from the awkwardly-monikered Yamantaka // Sonic Titan (a name combining their twin passions of Eastern theatre and stoner rock), who centre around the talents of Toronto/Montreal-based Alaska B and Ruby Kato Attwood, who quite charmingly call this mixture of their Eastern heritage and Western lifestyle as "Noh Wave".   It's pretty entertaining stuff, strident and precise, sometimes cold and almost Tool-like, but with the unpredictability of CocoRosie as they launch from Cake-esque raps to moody field recordings, tinkling piano to honking jazz-noise. As far as I can tell from the press release this is a concept record but I haven't figured out the plot yet. Sonically it's very ambitious though. When they go full prog they're sometimes reminding me of that Japanese band Sigh, that same kind of clinical but theatrical flourish.   It's a huge-sounding and diverse record that's flat-out bonkers in places and may take a few listens to properly digest. I'm finding the slick production a little sterile at times but it's nonetheless bold and imaginative and well worth a listen.
