Sampletronic madhead VHS Head is back with a new album on Skam this week. If you don't know this guy's schtick by now, he makes amazing electronic cut-and-paste collages out of samples from old VHS tapes - it's punchy, glitchy, disorienting and relentlessly melodic, with stomping beats it's hard not to bob your head to as the tunes rush by in a technicolour explosion of tiny snippets of tone and melody that sometimes feel strangely familiar. I am obliged to use the words Skam and IDM at some point in the review so there you go.   I guess in terms of comparisons I'd place it somewhere between Mouse on Mars and a slicker, less unhinged (more hinged?) Jason Forrest, quite frantic and chaotic in its composition but beneath that fucked up veneer is a heart of pure party pop. The samples are tastefully and cleverly chosen, the beats are stomping, it's good-time music that'll sound as good when you're driving down the motorway in the middle of the night as it does when you're mashed off your skull at a debauched house party. Approved.
