Bass Clef aka Ralph Cumbers has had a reasonably busy beginning to the year with a coupla self released tapes on his MAGIC + DREAMS label and vinyl appearing on Alter, Public Information and Mordant Music as Some Truths and now a 4 track acid laced EP for the esteemed PAN label entitled ‘Raven Yr Own Worl’

‘Self Perpetuating Fun Loop’ in true Ronseal style does what it says on the tin; a feel good dose of wibbly new school acid in a similar mode to the Rephlex artist roster’s rephreshing approach to the classic Chicago 303 sound - so think Luke Vibert, Ceephax etc. Party vibes guaranteed. I reckon rather than tweaking the pots on a TB-303 he’s summoning the acid with his mitts firmly on his beloved BugBrand modular setup although I could be wrong. ‘Fluorescent City, Shining City’ has stripped back, bare bones percussion and pulsating filtered synths all building towards a lovely melancholy bassline while as the drums grow they take on a sorta stoned carnival feel and then the acid starts wiggling and squirming into the laid back dubby groove.

‘Euphoric Nihilism’ is crawling with insectoid electronic bleeps, with an oldskool UK bleeps n bass feel but with a more stomping techno thud and of course plenty of rubbery squelching acid. ‘Adventures Unventured, Tenderness Untendered’ rounds off the EP nicely with dusty keys which gradually get the dubwise treatment, but before things get too smoked out things temporarily switch gear slightly to a heavier stepping mode and then back to bliss out and then back again with the heaviness but all draped in fluttering dreamy dubbed out electronics. A sweet end of the party kinda tune. Lovely stuff... Keep ‘em coming Mister Cumbers.
