There's some proggy stoner rock on this new album from French trio Mars Red Sky. It's chunky and grand-sounding stuff, well produced for a loud and clear sound as they rumble their way through some heavy '70s rock riffs and admirably fuzzed-up wah guitar from the Heads/Aqua Nebula Oscillator school, but with quite a theatrical dynamic range, going from drifty calm to earth crumbling riffs in a way ...

There's some proggy stoner rock on this new album from French trio Mars Red Sky. It's chunky and grand-sounding stuff, well produced for a loud and clear sound as they rumble their way through some heavy '70s rock riffs and admirably fuzzed-up wah guitar from the Heads/Aqua Nebula Oscillator school, but with quite a theatrical dynamic range, going from drifty calm to earth crumbling riffs in a way that reminds me of Leeds's own Human Fly. The guy singing reminds me of that girl from Purson. It took me a couple of songs to twig that it was actually a man.   It's all delivered with great accuracy and the sounds are nice, but there's something a little too prepared-sounding about it, not enough of that half-falling-apart spontaneity which I love about the best weed rockers. They make a nice big riffy sound but there's something that seems almost hollow about it. Perhaps I'm just in the wrong frame of mind, there's plenty to like about it but it ain't taking me into space like I'd hoped.
