Flute folk metal from Toronto’s Blood Ceremony. Three albums deep with an Electric Wizard support slot under their belt, Blood Ceremony are rather difficult to dislike. It’s impossible not to refer to Jethro Tull but you sense that this is an influence worn on their wizard’s sleeve. Out on limited edition coloured vinyl 7” with lyric insert. From Rise Above.

The gloomy atmospheres from past releases is still there on this 7", yet it has become less explicit and more nuanced. Alia's flute has the flavor of lysergic fairytale: vaguely disturbing, yet never creepy. While there is plenty of bands now walking the paths of occult rock (inserting themselves exactly in that same path reopened by Blood Ceremony few years ago), the Canadian band moves towards other territories, where the shadow meets the light of the sun. A place that will surely alienate some of the old followers, but that will certainly make new ones.
