8/10 Mike Staff review, 24 April 2014
Those lovely people at Time Released Sound have another offering for us this week with the usual normal/nice packaging dilemma. They've really outdone themselves with the fancy version this time around, combining my twin passions of film canisters and polar exploration into a bespoke listening item that even I am struggling to resist.
The liner notes in the non-fancy version I'm listening to now describe it as a "62-minute imaginary soundbook". I would describe it as "icy electronic ambience", there's lots of high, gliding electronic drones making slow, sleepy chords, as well as touches of intermittent guitar twinkling and grainy, glitching weirdness, lots of weird electronic pops which in places are starting to make me feel increasingly mad, although they seem to calm down over the second half of the album. Each piece builds up layers of gentle, mostly relaxing textures and is over before it outstays its welcome, and overall there's a lovely feeling of stillness and isolation to this collection.
