8/10 Mike Staff review, 15 May 2014
Here's the second of today's reissued Beastmilk 7"s from before their breakthrough 'Climax' LP. There's a serious step up here production-wise in comparison to the 'White Stains on Black Wax' one-sider I just listened to. That one had cracked, lo-fi black metal production and this one is much more crisp and clean. The guitars are still distorted but it doesn't sound like everything's broken any more, meaning they sound even more like the Misfits than before. The songs are rousing deathrock anthems with a stomping intensity and drama. 'Forever Animal' is particularly cool, an icy churning bit of goth-rock with minor-chord vocal harmonies and primitive drumming. I think what I like about it is that they manage to be super-catchy but still really dark and brooding and a bit nasty, kind of like if Danzig fronted Ice Age. Cool stuff.
