Looks like post-rock is back, just don't call it post-rock. A sticker on the front of this CD says USA Out Of Vietnam "combine elements of psych pop, prog rock and drone pop" but I'd say the main ingredients here are those early-'00s staples, post-rock and post-metal. Is post-rock really such a toxic term now that we dare not speak its name?   Which isn't to say this is bad, or even unoriginal. This lot specialise in ten-minute songs with big slow Torche-meets-Motorpsycho vocal harmonies, windswept synth drones and chunky churning guitars. They confidently distinguish themselves from the bulk of the post-rock crowd through their heavy use of vocals and doomy Sleep/Floor-esque riffing much like Red Sparowes do with all their tasty slide guitar.   It's an ambitious, grandiose sound and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. The songs develop slowly and cautiously but once they build up a head of steam they're thunderously heavy. The vocals are sometimes vocodered and processed into a weird robotic texture that I like and 'You Are A Comet, You Are On Fire' explodes from field recordings and synth drones into a triumphant brass band crescendo at the end which it's hard not to be uplifted by.   The tunes and riffs are pretty consistently huge and lend all the songs a pleasing stoner doom heaviness. It's post-rock, Jim, but not as we know it.
