7/10 Mike Staff review, 15 May 2014
New York synthpop duo Young Magic return with a second album of woozy, ghostly synthpop this week, pairing dark, crisp beats with oozing FlyLo synths and breathy vocals multi-tracked and processed into alien neon smudges. The overall effect is sensuous and strangely intoxicating, a dense mist of indistinct pop with robotic minimal beats and occasional bright harp twinkles anchoring an otherwise indistinct and reverb-heavy aesthetic.   Particularly effective is the short but sweet 'Cobra', a slinky trip-hop groove with a weird grating synth loop, a few understated Morricone guitar twangs and an ethereal vocal fog floating over it all. It's like the hyper-modern nocturnal synthpop of people like Nite Jewel or Terror Bird, but with the kind of slickly weird production you'd expect if Forest Swords and the Knife got together. Not bad I say.
