7/10 Ian Staff review, 25 April 2014

Glacial Pace Recordings brings us the debut album by Survival Knife, featuring ex Unwound lads Justin Trosper and Brandt Sandeno together with long time friends Kris and Meg Cunningham, ‘Loose Power’ follows on from a couple of successful singles on both Sub Pop and the legendary Kill Rock Stars label and it’s pretty much in the same vein. With a more mature outlook on the old post-hardcore scene this has more in common with later period Jawbox or Quicksand, loud and growly guitars combined with the old quiet verse loud chorus building to an even louder crescendo.

There is the odd angular moment though with a hint to Unwound of old, but other than that it’s nothing too heavy going and is actually quite a straightforward rock album. Any Unwound fans (like me!) expecting something along the same lines as ‘Leaves Turn Inside You’ or ‘Fake Train’ might be a bit upset but aside from that it’s still a pretty likeable album, if you combine the Unwound spark with a more classic 90’s rock sound then that’s pretty much what you get here.

Survival Knife is to Unwound as Obits is to Drive Like Jehu.
