The relentlessly tuneless experimentalism of this week's review pile is getting me down so I'm dipping into this new LP from Spidergawd for a little respite. These guys have two members of Motorpsycho among their ranks but none of that band's sophistication - this is straight-down-the-line '70s riff rock which owes great debts to Black Sabbath, Kyuss and the Grateful Dead.   And it's alright. The band is tight, the Kapstad/Saether rhythm section certainly know how to keep up a bulldozing momentum, the singer does a good line in John Garcia-esque showboating and they're competent enough musicians to pull out some ripping solos when it comes to jam time. From the very first moment of the LP, however, where a tinny lo-fi recording suddenly bursts into rich, heavy widescreen, this is essentially a procession of cliches, delivered with relish by a bunch of hairy Norwegian nerds who have serious bands on the side but want to play some hairy '70s testosterock on their days off. In terms of their other band's recorded material it's closest to the loose, fun riffing of the 'Barracuda' era.   It's fun enough, a sort of affectionate parody of hard rock in the same way that their Tussler sideline indulged their obsession with country rock; and both charming and insubstantial for just the same reasons. Fans of all those fashionable '70s revival bands like Uncle Acid, Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, Satan's Satyrs et al will surely enjoy this too, but Snah's not involved so don't expect Motorpsycho.
