9/10 Mike Staff review, 23 May 2014
Influential garage rockers Cheater Slicks have been going for years now, with over a dozen albums behind them, and I'm very happy to see this gem from 1991 back in print.   The formula here is simple; scuzzy, catchy rock'n'roll songs with no more than four chords each, rickety lo-fi production values, loose delivery...in some respects it's a muddy, simplistic mess, but these naively delivered songs are just too charming and instinctive to resist.   It's a clever formula, with a low amount of emotional investment required in the individual songs it's sustainable for years after their earnest heart-on-sleeve contemporaries have dried up and wilted and, much like another great band of the era Guided By Voices, the band really don't sound much different today. In fact it's fair to say that this kind of broken garage rock aesthetic probably sounds more current now than it did when it came out. If you're into the likes of Spider Bags and Ty Segall and The Milkshakes and The Cramps, you'll dig this too.
