- Unseen Warfare by Damaskin
8/10 Ant Staff review, 11 April 2014
Following the sold out ‘Black Ideal’ compilation, Unknown Percept continue the mission into the depths of gloomy techno with a 4 track EP from Damaskin. I know zilch about the artist other than the fact that this appears to be his/ her/ their first physical release. The opening title track is proper grubby with tumbling heavy kicks and, scratchy metallic mechanical sounds and dislocated rhythms. ‘Glory In Damaskin’ is a more straight up mid-paced techno chugger which despite its dark cloak of fizzing distortion has a joyous celebratory feel with a weird bubbling wriggly synth noise that’s pretty cool
Over on the B-side ‘Remembrance of Death’ has a more militant stomp with fire cracker snares and sinewy monotone groove and a struggling bassline that sounds like a bee dying into a megaphone. ‘Contra Theatra’ has a tension building almost fog horn sounding loop and builds with a filthy bassline, sparse 909 claps and straight heavy 4/4 kicks. No nonsense heads down, dark bangin techno, and probably the pick of the bunch in terms of getting a few shrieks of pleasure from the dancefloor. All quality murky slightly industrial tinged warehouse/ bunker techno.
