Stave’s ‘Reform’ and ‘Trust’ records have been getting some hammering round at mine so when news that the man behind Stave, Jonathan Krohn had a 12” coming on Downwards collaborating with Karl Meier the day of release couldn’t come soon enough, especially as the Chicago duo had whet the appetite with a track on the 20 years of Downwards compilation ‘Halha’.
That track in fact appears here opening the 12” in extended form; a slow creeper with cavernous booming reverb smothered drums and heavy comatose doomy soundscapes filled with dread and paranoia. ‘Black Snake’ has blasts of explosive industrial noise erupting around a militant groove that recalls Ancient Methods. ‘Carrier’ bizarrely sounds like some muffled humming of The Stooges ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ beneath grainy textures and a swirly hypnotic pulse that’s like moving around on some nightmarish merry-go-round.
This will snuggle up nicely with your Samuel Kerridge and Oake records.
