Weird and wonderful emissions from Marcia Bassett and Metal Rouge's Helga Fassonaki appearing as Zaimph and Yek Koo respectively. Zaimph’s output I know and love while I’m only vaguely familiar with Yek Koo’s recordings having heard a coupla records she did for Emerald Cocoon.

Up on the A-side we have ‘Ensemble Sip’ where Marcia provides a minimal backdrop of sparse short drones and bursts of cracked, fizzing electronics leaving plenty of space for Helga’s trumpet and effects. First time I copped this I was kinda bewildered but really got into it on second spin once I got my head around what’s happening. Marcia is in a very restrained stripped back mode compared to her usual Zaimph work, yet it complements Helen’s idiosyncratic approach to the trumpet perfectly. There’s a really sad almost strangulated sound to the trumpet and just when you think it’s gonna die Marcia comes in with an electric shock resuscitation breathing new life into it.

A swift flip of the tape reveals ‘Blended Un’ which I can only assume is from the same performance recorded in NYC 2013. Here we get lovely twinkles and ceramic like chimes mutating into pulsing more intense bubbling electronics that ebb and flow, pushing forward and slowly receding while the trumpet relays the tales of a thousand broken dreams as Marcia’s electronics become increasingly dark and zoned.

A great meeting of minds and a truly unique collaboration. Strange and mysterious tape alert!
