Feeding Tube Records this week drop the first of two LPs chronicling little-known proto-no wave band Jack Ruby, with this platter chronicling the period of 1974-'77 with demo recordings on side A and rehearsal tapes on the flip. What's most notable about this lot is the fact that they sound like an early '80s no wave band and yet pre-date the punk movement itself.   The rehearsal tapes are pretty reasonable quality and the studio recordings sound purposefully rotten so there isn't the off-putting wide range of sound quality you might expect from this kind of collection. The stuff on side A sounds more futuristic thanks to contributions from Randy Cohen on synthesizer that give the stabby guitar crunch a Suicide-ish roboticness on 'Mayonnaise' while in 'Bored Stiff' it brings a submerged brightly melodic counterpoint to the clattering chaos the rest of the band are producing. By side B they've reverted to a more conventional guitar/bass/drums formula but the delivery is no less wild, occupying territory between Birthday Party/U-Men grotesqueness and cocky Stooges/New York Dolls swagger. Totally ahead-of-its-time proto-no-wave/noise punk.
