Finnish producer Ukkonen has a new 12" out this week with a lengthy composition on each side. On the first we have 'Luomus', a shimmering bit of euphoric dronework with a soft house beat bubbling just below the surface, full of inviting but indistinct 'A Place In The Sun' vibes. It's really floaty and layered and a bit new agey and it drifts along all warm and nice for ages, before we head into a second movement which is a bit more abstract, full of jarring clicky rhythms and plinky synth for a deconstructed and disorienting take on the first half's silky summer pleasantries. Melodically and rhythmically it's pretty confusing by the end, but the tones remain relaxing throughout.
Over on the other side 'Aikomus' opens with soft drones and a synth flickering out a morse-code melody which is then joined by beats that are much crisper than those found on side A, a stammering computerised groove. This time round the rhythms stay steady but the melodies drift all over the place in a way that's very hard to follow. It gets quite confusing and claustrophobic towards the end though, like you're trapped inside the machine and the machine is eating itself alive. It's a strong double-header of experimental future house, vague and airy on side A, crisp and immediate on side B.
