- Super Forma by Orval Carlos Sibelius
5/10 Ian Staff review, 10 June 2014
I’ll be totally honest, I know absolutely nothing about this guy or his former band Centenaire so I’ll try my best to get my head around this strange record in my usual haphazard fashion. His name is Orval Carlos Sibelius and ‘Super Forma’ is his second album released on the Clapping Music label, straight away with opening track ‘Sonho De Songes’ you know exactly where he’s going with this album, full of psychedelic cliches it’s like Orval just wishes he was from the sixties.
It’s a pleasant enough listen with hints of Tame Impala or Unknown Mortal Orchestra but isn’t all this Beatlesy, Pink Floydy, rose tinted, lava lamp nonsense getting really tiring now? There’s an underlying sniff of Bruno Nicolai style themes in there but without the lovely sweeping strings that Nicolai does so well. ‘Super Forma’ is well produced and well thought out but I can’t seem to connect with it in any way, it does have some nice songs but lacks any real originality that this kind of retro stuff needs to make it interesting.
