- Poppy by Bernard + Edith

This isn't bad at all. Bernard & Edith are a duo from Manchester is the only thing I have learned about them from the press release. They play a kind of silky minimal weirdpop that's very appealing. 'Poppy' has a kind of lo-fi trip-hop lollop to it and pairs vibrant female crooning with a pitched down male harmony that sounds really woozy and sinister, but the melody itself is quite catchy so there's a kind of dissonance there that's strangely arousing. If I came home late at night and, having made my excuses with the scary little guy with the synth (see previous Rene Margraff review), came upstairs and this duo were in my bathroom, dressed only in an inch-thick coating of whipped cream, singing this song, I'd probably be like "oh, alright then, I guess it's just going to be one of those nights".
Over on the other side 'Spell On U' is also weird, a crunching robot rhythm alongside spaced out synth drift and languorous vocals riffing vaguely on the lyrics from the Hawkins classic, but I'm not sure you can really call it a cover. It's not as immediate as the A side but it's really fucking weird and that'll do.
