Founded by Peanut Butter Wolf (and while we're here, bless Charizma), the legendary Stones Throw Records has housed a community responsible for some of the most influential hip-hop artists of all time, from Madlib to beat-making genius Dilla. Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton: This Is Stones Throw Records offers a deep and affectionate look at the label's origins and sustained impact; and, in the living definition of a self-fulfilling prophecy, it has a pretty fantastic soundtrack.

This documentary on the history of legendary LA-based hip hop label Stones Throw Records gives fascinating insights into how the label came together with commentary from some of the more important figures, such as founder Peanut Butter Wolf, J Rocc, Egon, and the interview-shy genius Madlib. It charts the evolution of the label from straight-up underground hip hop tastemakers to the increasingly eclectic roster which includes modern doo-wop artist Mayer Hawthorne and obscure performance artist Gary Wilson. Talking heads discussing the influence of Stones Throw on hip hop include Q-tip and Kanye West (who even references a Madlib beat that would end up appearing on Life of Pablo).
As with any documentary of its kind, it can't possibly give enough attention to every deserving record or artist but it does an admirable job of letting us inside the inner workings of a fascinating label.
