- Girl by Jamie xx
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 01 May 2014
Of course - its ‘I.O.U’ by Freez thats being sampled. Luckily to stop me going insane the sleeve credits the samplees - its not everyday you see Brian Wilson credited on anything post dub-step and I can’t easily hear where ‘Our Prayer’ fits in but glad its there.
I don’t know what anyone else thinks but I really like this - its MASSIVE, stadium sized lush-tronica with that whole phasing Flying Lotus type thing going on yet big enough to get the whole of Wembley stadium clapping along. Hey Jamie, why not ditch the misery guts and we can all have fun eh?
On the B side he goes one better than the Beach Boys and samples 50’s vocal quartet The Four Freshmen. Not that you’d know, its a kind of lopsided bass-heavy jam with lots of wierd twinkling bells. Gotta love the bit where it all phases down to the bass and re-emerges with a nice voice sample.
Clever, listenable and, yes, palatable to anyone with ears but why not?
9/10 Oli Customer review, 8th January 2015
I find this single hauntingly beautiful. Catchy and up-beat synthesisers structure 'Girl' in a way that intrudes your mind, refusing to leave until you are submerged completely by Jamie himself. It's as if the ghostly-like feminine voice is trapped in your head, yelling in a chaos repeatedly telling you 'I want your love'. She is the most beuatiful girl in Hackney you know?
'Sleep Sound' on the other hand, well, it's kinda boring. The repeated groans from, again a feminine voice like in 'Girl' make you feel as if this song is a never ending abyss, and you are eventually going to skip the song and repeat 'Girl' again.
But another solid release from Jamie xx. Look forward to his future releases, as well as The xx's 3rd LP soon to be released.
