I'm starting the day with this soothing new CD from Akisai on Schole. The press release is full of brow-wrinkling auto-translate gobbledegook, but the impression that I get is that this was made as a collaborative audio-visual piece. There are ten tracks here of beautifully constructed electro-acoustica with lots of piano, acoustic guitar, subtle rhythms and soft synths, it's loopy and highly melodic, the kind of music you would expect to hear on an episode of 'A Place In The Sun'.
As far as easy listening goes, though, I'm having a very good time with it. The guitar has a really bright, silky tone and all the music here is very warm and friendly and intuitively constructed. Muzak seems to be an influence here, there are places where I feel like I'm on hold in the brassy 'Memoment', but then the ambient-inspired field recordings and graceful piano of the shuffly lounge number 'Flow' that follows it demonstrate that this is no mere elevator music. It's a thoughtful, elegant collection of soft-pop instrumentals with no obvious missteps - gentle and likeable all the way.
