'Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik' is the debut album from Southern hip hop innovators OutKast. Alongside Goodie Mob and Geto Boys, the duo of Big Boi and Andre 3000 helped to put the South of America on the rap music map, eventually leading to the trap music boom of the 2010s. Always one for a concept, the pair wrote this record detailing gritty urban life in Atlanta whilst still in their teens. Andre's and Big Boi's raps are knotty and clever, whilst the live instrumentation and production draws on mellow funk, smokey soul, big bass and snappy snares. Features the classic title track and the anthem 'Player's Ball'.

This album is amazing for a debut and also is impressive considering the fact that Andre and Big Boi were practically teenagers when they made it. It's a lot grittier than the Outkast albums to follow it; the lyrics are basically the duo talking about how they grew up, what street life is like, and what they learned. The beats are very funky with that G-Funk lean that reminds me of Dr. Dre or Snoop fused with a jazzy Funkadelic type sound almost. There's also some guitar and other instrumentation that you wouldn't expect to find on a rap album.
