It seems that comebacks are the in thing at the moment what with My Bloody Valentine’s triumphant return last year and The Pixies disappointing new album, here we have Sub Pop veterans Afghan Whigs first album for 16 years and with amazing albums like 1993’s ‘Gentlemen’ and the soulful ‘Black Love’ from 1996 in their back catalogue then this is gonna be a hard act to follow. ‘Do To The Beast’ is a pretty good effort though, it’s in no way as instantly mind blowing as those early albums but all the fiery emotion of the Whigs glory days is still there.

Greg Dulli’s powerful, almost strained vocal delivery makes you wonder if he’s even aged at all in 16 years and there’s plenty of soul and intensity in there to keep it interesting. standout tracks are ‘The Lottery’ with it’s hypnotising delayed guitar riff and the dusty americana of ‘Can Rova’, there still seems to be something lacking though, maybe it’s just because so much time has passed since we first fell in love with this band or maybe I’m getting far too cynical in my old age, if that’s the case then ignore me because at the end of the day The Afghan Whigs are STILL one of the greatest bands on the planet!

8/10 rochenstein Customer review, 26th November 2014

The vinyl itself is a lovely package, albeit there is a little skip on Can Rova (IIRC). This is a pressing issue according to the folks at discogs. Still nothing so egregious that it would diminish your enjoyment of the album.

As for the music itself, this is one of my favourite albums from 2014. Dulli & co have still got it - the album just flows past beautifully, albeit in a slightly more polished form than on Black Love or Gentlemen. I had the pleasure of seeing them live a few weeks ago and the new tunes fit in beautifully into their set. Here's hoping they stay together and release a few more albums of this quality.
