- The Purification Loops by Sigha

Following a pair of crackers as A Vision of Love, James Shaw returns to pal Guy Brewer’s Avian label under his most well known alias Sigha with a sizzling loop based 6 tracker. When I read the phrase ‘loop based’ in the press release I got the fear... For when techno became so heavily loop based and monotonous at the end of the 90’s early 2000’s I thought my favourite genre was dead. Not that I’m against repetition, you simply couldn’t be a techno freak if you were, but you know, shit can get boring.
Thankfully that’s not the case with ‘The Purification Loops’ which in a sense feels like a logical evolution from Jeff Mills’ ‘Cycle 30’ although these are not locked grooves. However like Mills and even Maurizio before him James shows that if a loop is strong enough it could play for eternity and you can still get lost in it time and time again. Sigha uses a finely tuned and tweaked palette that clearly stands out as being his own sound despite many other producers exploring the same dark aesthetic. ‘Loop One’ is almost like a tough variant of Mills’ early ‘Purpose Maker’ material with additional darkside atmospheres. ‘’Loop Two’ is like a death metal dual kick drum assault; a full on pounder with searing blasts of pure electricity. ‘Loop Three’ goes deep into the realms of sci-fi dystopia. ‘Loop Four’ is a driving energetic club banger with chilling icy drones and fluttering percussion. ‘Loop Five’ sounds gargantuan with twitchy shuffling metallic percussion underpinning fizzy and grainy textures. ‘Loop Six’ again has multiple fast moving kicks which rather than sounding like some sorta nose-bleed stormcore seem to function almost as a bassline.
All tracks are pretty dense and rammed full of bleak futuristic sound design, there’s nothing minimal, stripped back overly monotonous or boring here, rather a master class in how the interaction between a few well crafted loops can create the illusion of shifting patterns that hypnotise and transport the mind and body. Great techno and a real highlight in both the Sigha and Avian catalogues.
