Blue Train by John Coltrane was recorded in 1957. Blue Train follows the jazz sub-genre of Hard Bop. It was his second album, and surprisingly the only one he ever recorded for the legendary Blue Note label, although Coltrane was never officially signed to the label. This vinyl reissue celebrates the label’s 75th anniversary.

When I read the updated liner notes, I learned that this recording was Coltrane's only Blue Note recording as a leader. I never knew he recorded for this label. Nevertheless, the musicianship was exceptional. He chose the sidemen; Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Coltrane wrote four of the five tracks. This disc included alternate takes of "Blue Train," and "Lazy Bird." Great recording and great album cover!
