- Proud Maisre / If I Was a Bird by The Lords of Thyme
The Lords of Thyme sounds like the name of Dr Who’s Canterbury folk band doesn’t it?
It probably won’t surprise you that these Thyme-Lords have nothing to do with the BBC franchise. This is in fact understated folky business which does indeed sound like it’s straight out of Canterbury, however. I’m picking out phrases like “petticoat camomile”, it’s that kind of thing. There’s lots of empty space, droning fiddles melting into vintage Hammond sounds, a twangy fingerpicked acoustic guitar and a clear, bright electric one in places...halfway through the song a girl takes over the vocals.
They’re singing about making clothes for each other. It’s very tasteful and well observed ‘70s-style Canterbury folk. TLDR: Canterbury.

One of the surprises of the last 12 months is the debut single by this Circulus related outfit. It sounds nothing like Circulus though (who went in a more medieval folk/prog/hippy direction influenced by Gryphon and even Gong) and the band sound draw on classic Pentangle, Fairport Convention and similar serious folk sounds of the 1970's with male and female vocals and exactly the right kind of atmospheric production. Surely an album must follow ?
