I have a couple of singles to inspect this morning. The first of those is this one from Sivu, which is a big bright epic pop type number led by a quivering Scottish croon, part Wild Beasts, part Frightened Rabbit. It veers between tentative verses and big confident U2 choruses, in fact the chorus is a strange mid-point between early U2 and the first Passion Pit EP, lots of falsetto vocals, it's all very earnest and emotional but the studio polish is a little to slick for me to connect with it, in all its strident 6music-destined ambition.

On the B side is 'Dumb', a deconstructed version of Nirvana's classic which uses spooky synth drones and boomy bass. It's a bad idea and only saved from my personal Worst Cover of the Week award by the crapulent Minutemen cover on the one-star new Famy EP. Unlike that phonographic mistake, this one doesn't make me angry, just disappointed. I think you're dumb too, Sivu. Please stop now.
