Here's an LP which collects both of Tall Ships' first two EPs onto a single handy package, showing why everyone got so excited about them in the first place while simultaneously making this material widely available once again. It's a wickedly energetic indie pop concoction full of spidery twisting clean guitar melodies and mid-paced '90sish power-pop grooves, all performed with a sprightly enthusiasm that's rather infectious.

Songwriting-wise, they often remind me of Field Music; solidly constructed bits of workmanlike pop music mixing melodic boldness with English reserve, but there's a breathless youthful vigour here too, making me think of bands like Los Campesinos or Johnny Foreigner. The sheer amount of guitar twiddling invites Minus the Bear comparisons too, but with a shimmering Explosions in the Sky-esque penchant for the dramatic post-rock build up, delivered in textbook style on 'Vessels', although they do throw in a surprise post-climactic folky section to keep you guessing.

In essence, though, this is just good old-fashioned indie pop. If you liked their album then here's a chance to catch up on what you missed prior to that.
