- The Belleville EP by JBLA

JBLA is the result of a jam session between Julian Jöckel (midnightopera), Stuart Argabright (Ike Yard, Black Rain, o13), Michael Langeder and Bernardo Risquez from Different Fountains. The EP’s title track is a dark downbeat atmospheric cut with spoken word vocal from Argabright, relaying words about Belleville’s ladies of the night. It’s a pleasant enough tune with shuffling drums and blue synth atmospheres. ‘Night With Potential’ is a chilled downtempo number with laid back late night groove with almost jazzy flourishes.
The remixes is where the real action for me... ahem.. L.I.E.S. With Long Island Electrical Systems main man Ron Morelli teaming up with his label artist and fellow Parisian dweller Svengalisghost (Shadowlust). Together they splatter the vocal with echo and delay and work in a real nasty dirty acidic groove and rapid fire twangy bassline. As it loops it constantly builds and will whip a dancefloor into a frenzy of anticipation but instead of kicking in hard it just gets dreamier as all the effects make the vocals dissolve endlessly into a dubbed out haze. The minimal percussion holds it all together nicely until its density peaks with some ecstatic goose bump inducing beams of lush synth and then everything just gradually falls away into nothing.
Fellow L.I.E.S. and more recently The Trilogy Tapes artist Vereker roughs up ‘Night With Potential’ looping parts with additional distortion to make for a mechanical, crunchy groove breaking through the filtered foggy synth work.
