For a brief chilling second I thought this was a new record by Money, a band I don't like. Happy to report that it is no such thing, it's just a song called 'Money' by this band Life. These 'Ull 'opefuls have gone down to London and recorded this with a Kaiser Chief and it's a bouncy, full-sounding bit of '90s rock with a couple of bits of thoroughly pointless studio trickery failing to disguise a decent chorus and a chiming guitar hook. It's very bright-eyed and enthusiastic and catchy. It sounds like it should be on an episode of Skins.
'Crawling' is on the other side and this is actually much more fun than the A side, but wait...this sounds familiar! It's a somewhat audacious rip-off of Parquet Courts' 'Borrowed Time'. The formula is identical, jangly guitars, rhythmic spoken verses, even the same sing-song melody in the chorus. Did they hear the track, forget they heard it, and then re-write it by accident, or are they just sailing a bit close to the wind in their stab at doing a song that sounds like Parquet Courts?
This is the better of the two tracks here but the similarities are making me go "hmmm" and do an incredulous face, which is totally hypocritical of me because I just gave 9 out of 10 to a compilation that included a similarly audacious Bollywood not-quite-a-cover of MJ's 'Thriller'.
