8/10 Clinton Staff review, 03 April 2014

Long time no see. I remember the Cluckster from back in the day when if Devandra Banhart said something, then people listened and the bearded Bolan certainly had some good things to say on the beautiful compositions of Ms Cluck.

So its been awhile but nothing has really changed. She has a lovely pastoral feel to her songs using gently plucked acoustics, wandering cello and the odd bit of piano to paint pale, watercolour  evocative pictures. Elusive in that if you try to catch them they float away. Comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom and Marissa Nadler are apt but once this voice enters your ears its hard to think about anyone else. Actually there are hints of a rural, rustic Suzanne Vega in her delivery on the percussive, ever expanding melodies of ‘Why Feel Alone’.

A singular talent, certainly, you are not quite sure what she is going to do next and this may include an acappella effort like ‘Not Afraid to Be Kind’. There are some tracks that would fit into the ‘freak-folk’ bracket but on tracks like the gorgeously flowing ‘Heartloose’ its heartwrenchingly melodic and beautifully sung.

Good to have her back, been away far, far too long.
