It's really been a good couple of weeks for compilations. Last week we had that amazing 'Bollywood Disco' collection, and this week we've got 'Rock It...Don't Stop It!' full of classy proto-hip-hop grooves and this self-explanatory double LP containing "the funky fuzzy sounds of West Africa". It's a raucous melting pot of Western rock, funk and disco influences fused with the polyrhythms and group vocals of the area's traditional music.

Lately there has been more attention on music from the region with the 'Music From Saharan Cellphones' compilations and that great 3LP William Onyeabor collection so this is quite a timely reissue. Onyeabor's own upbeat synth number 'Better Change Your Mind' shares side C with the searing fuzz guitar scorcher 'Allah Wakbarr' by Ofo and The Black Company, and the cool rhythms and call and response vocals of Gasper Lawal's 'Awon-Ojise-Oluwa'.

The quality is excellent throughout, both in terms of recordings and performances, everything is crystal clear and in your face and the songs have been carefully selected and sequenced for maximum enjoyment. It's turning into one of those weeks where I wish I had more money to spend on records.
