Here’s a slick bit of folk-pop from Reuben and the Dark, who I’m not familiar with. They’re on Canada’s Arts and Crafts but to me they sound Scottish like Stornoway or Frightened Rabbit. You know the formula, moody, slick, anthemic, all strummy acoustic guitar and stomping beats and big Scottish-sounding vocal harmonies, although a glance at the press release confirms my suspicions that they are in fact Canadian and Reuben used to skateboard. Interesting.

Over on the other side is a downbeat ballad with mournfully strummed guitar and a plangent trumpet parping away. It was going alright but then I hit the vocal harmonies which swamp the mix like Mumford & Sons all trying to sing in the style of Josh T Pearson. It’s ambitious stuff but seems a little lacking in imagination.
