Our ever-industrious post-it imp has taken a listen to this new Cherry Ghost CD despite already knowing he doesn't like the band. Our ever-industrious post-it imp has taken a listen to this new Cherry Ghost CD despite already knowing he doesn't like the band. "Sounds a bit better than normal", he concedes, before nominating me for the job of reviewing it. I'm not sure what I've done to deserve this auspicious opportunity, but I'll take it.   Basically what's happening here is grand-scale country pop the likes of Tom Petty used to make in the '70s, lots of sweeping strings and brass alongside twangy guitars and vocals and sometimes a nice wibbly slide guitar. Opener 'Clear Skies Ever Closer' tastes a bit like a Grateful Dead country ballad but orchestrated for a rousing X-Factor performance.   I'm finding the production to be quite consistently overblown and the pace consistently plodding. It's all a bit Neil Diamond-meets-Coldplay for my tastes to be honest. Nothing that hasn't already been done better, but if late-era Verve and Alt-J can be huge, why not these guys?
