This is a very different beast from the previous William Ryan Fritch material I’ve heard. I had him down as an extremely capable musician veering around in the gentle neo-classical, electro-acoustic area but this is a full on orchestrated opus in the style of Grizzly Bear or latter day Damien Jurado. Its a sprawling enormous sounding thing with everything including the kitchen sink piled up in an impressive and at times overbearing manner.
His voice is a quite magical thing, sounding incredibly like Jeff Buckley, it swoops, it swoons, it soars as the songs undulate between acoustic interludes and full on Sigur Ros-like pile-it-all-on chaos-pop. The impressive ‘I Am Your Bread’ is a highlight and its very hard not to think of a modern day Van Dyke Parks with its twisty, turny, classical influenced pop. But its Grizzly Bear I keep coming back to, particularly the ‘Veckatimest’ album...but only...more so.
The sky scraping melodies, ambitious arrangements and wild mood swings sound like Jeff Buckley making ‘Grace’ with Grizzly Bear as his backing band. Brilliantly ambitious but not for everyone. This is one to keep an eye on.
