- Abandoned City by Hauschka

To be honest when it comes to Hauschka I can take it or leave it but there’s no denying the guy has come up with some mad decent stuff over the years and in terms of insight into the creative mind he can be a very helpful individual.
The title ‘Abandoned City’ for example is used as metaphor to describe the inner tension felt when creating new music from scratch capturing the sense of happiness and loneliness that can engulf the artist as he works. I’m down with this metaphor and I can totally relate. Where my interest wanes is in his approach, primarily because his choice instrument is the piano. On ‘Abandoned City’ everything you hear is composed and performed on piano. This makes for some fascinating and creative use of tonality and rhythm to convey the artists thoughts but the overall tone is too foreboding for my liking. It feels doomed!
It’s playful and inventive by comparison to many neo-classical artists but it’s still pretty darn bleak. Now he says the majority of this music was composed as a direct response to the birth of his child. If I was to have a child those emotions would be deeply complex and conflicted, mainly because I’m scared shitless of bringing a child into the world and I get the impression some of those emotions are present here but that might just be my interpretation, it’s hard to say.
Anyway, ‘Abandoned City’ is an impressive, unique and ultimately an effective piece of work regardless so for that Hauschka should be awarded and applauded. His style, methods and creative energy are second to none.
