Finnish composer/producer Islaja takes a bit of a U-turn this week with her fifth album 'SUU' shifting from the folk-influenced pop of previous releases into a dark and skewed Knife-esque electronic pop. Dark and disjointed techno rhythms and stark analogue synths are her chosen backing this time around, and the result is an entertainingly weird album of slinky nocturnal coldwave.

I'm enjoying how playful and sometimes tongue-in-cheek this record is. 'Shit Hit The Fan' has a silly whispered rap that's kind of funny and awkward, but then things get deadly serious in 'Siren Call' with crazily treated backing vocals and simple pulsating synths sounding like Imogen Heap and Zola Jesus indulging in a heavenly jam. This is a crisp and unusual album of sultry broken-machine synthpop. It's making me feel a bit weird, kind of woozy and uneasy. Time for more coffee I think.
