- Rybka / Where The River Don’t Flow by Liz Green

Having seen Liz Green perform live a couple of years ago I was left with the impression that this was a woman who was not without talent but was clearly bonkers. Her jazzy old-timey compositions sometimes hit the sweet spot though so I'm prepared to investigate further.
This is her first single in ages and delves way into the jazz-inflected folk she often hinted at. Its all double bass and horns and late night supper club arrangements. ‘Rybka’ is kind of a cross between Jake Thackray, Tom Waits, Josephine Foster and a Polish waltz. Its very VERY different and you’ll barely hear anything else like this all year. Recorded at Toe-Rag studios, its beautifully recorded with lightly brushed drums and a careful horn arrangement supplementing Liz’s wordy delivery.
On the flip, a similarly vintage arrangement, this time with a honky-tonk old piano taking the lead. A really unusual single which I’ve enjoyed way more than I could have ever expected.
