Return Of The Super Ape by Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters

8/10 Vern 4th May 2014

The Super Ape has been trampling around a bit lately! A re-issue of the first album, The Super Ape, for record store day went down a treat and now this re-pressing of the second Super Ape album from Lee Scratch ensures that the Ape keeps on prowling his way along our turntables. This is a beautiful record. It's array of sounds from different genres is what makes Lee Scratch interesting for me. If you want a traditional, great dub record, check out Dub Feast by The Congos or something similar because this Ape is a stranger beast. The track 'Return of The Super Ape' is some kind of jazz style track with buried vocals which is unusual and enthralling. It then goes right back into classic dub reggae with 'Tell Me Something Good' which hooks you in and gets ya head bobbin'. It's the little electronic flourishes which I find interesting like those on the opening track. It keeps the album really alive and just really, really fun. It's an album to have on while chatting with some mates and just generally having a whale of a time. There's a pun about monkeying around and the Super Ape in there but I won't venture down that route. Lovely stuff.
