Big fan of the Central Processing Unit label. Not massively familiar with all the artists but almost every new release has at least one or two beautiful electro/house/party bangers on there. Favourites worth seeking out are CN, Automatic Tasty, Morphology and, of course, the ED DMX 12”. All good.
I’m not familiar with Paul Blackford but I’m not mad keen on the A-side of this 12” which isn’t a great start. There’s a Bane sample from the third Batman outing that’s kinda pecking my head a bit, guess I just struggle with these kind of samples but if it illustrates a point of some kind that the artist wants to convey then that’s cool, I can live with it. The vibe is kinda Wipeout techno style stuff. Fast, thin bassline and skitterish beats give it a sort of low-key breakbeat feel but it’s so weedy sounding it just doesn’t work for me.
Flip it and we get two shorter numbers ‘Proteus’ and ‘Robotix’. This is where my ‘at least one or two decent tunes’ theory comes into full effect as ‘Proteus’ is a real blissful affair. Again, the beats are kinda deliberately weedy and on an old school techno tip but the melodies are real sweet and the contrast totally works in Blackford’s favour. ‘Robotix’ is basically cool because it rips hard on Kraftwerk, can’t quite pinpoint the arpeggio but it’s on the tip of my tongue....which is irritating. Gonna look it up.
