This is nice. Its a series of droning soundscapes from this San Franciscan painter and musician and its not as unpalatable as a lot of music in its genre. The textural pieces usually have snippets of vocals to keep interest levels high and the sounds he uses are quite unusual.
It kinda reminds me of some of the more ambient sides of Cocteau Twins especially on ‘Victorialand’. I’m not sure why - perhaps as I listened to it last night. Anyway after the droning instrumental opener ‘Full Moon’, ‘Shaft of Light’ is the first impressive piece with a repeated guitar figure and droning feedback the tape delayed vocals repeat the same phrase over in quite an effective manner. It reminds me of some of the mid 90’s ‘space-rock’ such as Roy Montgomery or Azuza Plane. On the B side, ‘Orion’ is a synth laced piece with guitars strumming away beneath, the vocals here remind me of Richard Youngs on ‘Sapphie’ -nicely spaced apart and patient.
There is a final wierder soundscape and the 7” is accompanied by a CD containing a 70 minute piece which for obvious reasons I won’t have time to review.
